Vicat Group’s 3D concrete printing brand Lithosys at the heart of the project "The ReefLine"

13 June 2025

The Reef Stars’: a project at the intersection of art, science, and awareness, serving marine biodiversity.

Already exhibited in Miami, the sculpture “The Reef Star” (founded by Ximena Caminos and developed by The ReefLine) is now on display in Nice, at the heart of Jardin Albert 1er, in a unique version composed of 47 star-shaped elements. Created using Lithosys 3D concrete printing, these complex structures are designed to eventually recreate habitats that support the development of marine species. The project also serves an educational purpose, raising public awareness about the importance of ocean conservation.

3D technology in the service of biodiversity

The printed elements, representing 13 different types of components, feature varied and complex shapes: non-planar modules, inclined and perforated star-shaped surfaces—an artistic interpretation of animal and biological structures found in the marine environment. 3D printing enables fast, optimized production without material overuse, helping to reduce waste and costs.

A project from design to installation

The Lithosys team supported The ReefLine collective throughout the entire process from shape optimization to on-site implementation, including post-processing of the elements (perforations, seating, concrete surfacing). The installation of the modules in Jardin Albert 1er in Nice marks a key convergence point of UNOC 3, at the crossroads of artistic, technical, and environmental fields. A temporary exhibition open to the public from June 9 to 22, 2025.

A low-carbon formulation

This project also allowed Vicat to showcase its expertise in low-carbon innovation. The 20 tonnes of concrete used were produced with Lithomix, a specially formulated ink incorporating CARAT—a carbon-sink binder made from biochar. This low-carbon premix illustrates the Vicat Group’s commitment to sustainable construction, including in marine environments.
