Vicat on ABC project in Grenoble

15 October 2018

On Monday, October 15, 2018, the stakeholders in the conceptualization of the first autonomous buildings in France gathered in Grenoble for the laying of the foundation stone of ABC (Autonomous Building for Citizens). Vicat is involved in the project as the supplier of low-carbon concretes for construction contractor Bouygues Bâtiment Sud-Est.

The foundation-stone ceremony for the future ABC (Autonomous Building for Citizens) buildings on October 15, 2018, saw the economic and political stakeholders in the project gather at La Presqu'île, Grenoble's new sustainable neighborhood, to discuss the global approach to the housing of tomorrow.

The 62-apartment ABC project (42 middle-income rental apartments and 20 social-housing apartments) targets self-sufficiency for water and energy, optimized waste management, waste reduction, and improved daily living comfort for residents. The concept has a zero energy balance and as much as 70% autonomy for annual water and energy consumption. Construction of the project, which is the result of research and development by Bouygues Construction, got under way in July.

Béton Vicat was called on to supply 3,500 m3 of concrete over 8 months. To meet the environmental issues of the project, all the concrete supplied will be made with low-carbon CEM IV cement from the Créchy plant.

"The cement delivered for the project is produced locally", says Jean-Baptiste, Béton Vicat logistics manager. We work with short supply chains throughout the process. For the concrete, we work with the Vicat batching plant in Voreppe—15km north of the city—, and we're preparing the Varces facility—15km to the south—in case it is needed."

Anxious to respect the societal issues surrounding the jobsite, Béton Vicat made its Oxygène concrete mixer truck available for the project; it is powered by biogas and has an electric mixer drum—yet another way of expressing support for development of sustainable cities.
