Paving for creative spirits

January 2017

Customizing exterior paving at a student residence of the Swiss federal institute of technology in Zürich was the challenge faced by our Swiss subsidiary Creabeton Matériaux. Despite stringent imperatives in terms of functionality and design, together with a tight schedule, we succeeded in delivering an exceptional interlocking paving unit.

For the exterior paving at the HWW student residence of the Swiss federal institute of technology campus in Höngerberg, the landscape architects of Haag Landschaftsarchitektur of Zürich envisaged a very special pattern—a mosaic of waves—intended to be a faithful representation of the atmosphere of a student campus.

Rising to the challenge, our subsidiary Creabeton Matériaux manufactured interlocking concrete mosaic units of eight different polygonal shapes. The pavers were laid over an immense area, creating a regular yet dynamic surface that sets itself apart from what is achieved with the usual sorts of paving units.

Not only did we meet the aesthetic requirements, we also came up with an effective technical solution. The 6 and 20 mm joints are packed with a mix of sand and gravel that guarantees rainwater infiltration yet ensures the paving is readily negotiable by persons with impaired sight or in wheelchairs.
