Gigantic VR52 expressway project
After three decades in the pipeline, construction of the VR52 expressway between Marange-Silvange and Rombas, in eastern France, is finally under way.
While excavation of the cover-and-cut tunnel will only start in October, everything is being made ready for the cover slab.
The 5.8-km-long expressway will include a twin-cell tunnel.
The construction consortium in charge of the massive project, Demathieu Bard–Spie Fondations–Eurovia, appointed Béton Vicat to supply the concrete for the tunnel from its batching plant in Metz. More than 32,000 m3 of concrete will be delivered. A feature of the tunnel is the technique chosen for its construction: concrete diaphragm walls. These are the ideal solution in an urban environment with dense traffic.
Concrete is also of interest for its fire resistance, which is important for the cover slab and the fire protection panels made of self-consolidating concrete.
