Understanding how cement is produced

Step 1 : Extraction of raw materials

The quarry and the preparation of raw materials

With the use of explosives, blocks of limestone and clay are extracted from quarries and transported in large trucks to crushing facilities where they are reduced to the size of pebbles less than 10 cm in diameter. These raw materials are selected with rigorous care and attention. Their components must include lime (calcium hydrate), silica and iron oxide in pre-determined proportions.
