France - Hidden beneath the turf of Marcel Michelin Stadium

Date of the news: April 2017

Since the French rugby championship, the Top 14, resumed for the current season, the players of Association Sportive Montferrand Clermont Auvergne (ASM), the reigning leaders, have been playing home games on brand new turf, the result of hybrid technology combining natural and synthetic grass.

The turf of Marcel Michelin Stadium had been in poor condition for some time, gradually deteriorating as a result of recurrent problems of seepage and stagnation of rainwater. To improve the situation, last summer contractor Colas performed earthworks and placed an 8,000‑m² stabilized layer using Vicat’s Liants Hydrauliques Routiers soil-treatment binders supplied by the Créchy cement plant. With this material the underlying support is both strong and impermeable. It was graded to form slight slopes draining to the sides, then covered with a layer of sand and seeded with grass.

Vicat’s value-added : Previous experience on projects in the region using LV TS 03 hydraulic binder meant Vicat was able to guide the Colas laboratory service towards the right proportions and placement methods.
