France - Grain elevator on the up and up

Agricultural cooperative Limagrain, the leading flour producer in Europe and the world’s fourth-largest seed producer, wished to modernize its facilities in Ennezat, in central France.

Date of the news: May 2017

Agricultural cooperative Limagrain, the leading flour producer in Europe and the world’s fourth-largest seed producer, wished to modernize its facilities in Ennezat, in central France, by demolishing six obsolescent silos and building a new 18‑silo grain elevator.

“The contractor in charge of the project, SN Briant, a specialist in silo construction, chose to work with the Vicat cement division and Sigma Béton”, explains the Cement Unit project manager with the Center-West regional division. “The Créchy plant supplied the 2,300 tons of cement necessary for the eight‑month project, one that was highly demanding both technically and in terms of logistics”. The 30‑m‑tall silos had to be built monolithically using constantly moving slip forms; the structures thus rose at a rate of 2 cm/h.

Vicat’s value-added : For the construction of the eighteen silos, the R&D Department had to come up with the ideal concrete mix design for slip forming, i.e. one that is workable enough for the form to slide easily yet strong enough as it emerges from the form.
